Gunners and hunters began utilising them for better accuracy, the usage of bipods for rifles goes back to 1938.
For hunters, a bipod should be a must these days. Here we are going to speak about the pros and cons of having a bipod and whether or not you even need one.
For your AR-10 rifle, we will also evaluate the best bipods on the market, so you can make a better purchase decision.
What is the best Bipod for me?
Lets answer this question from a general point of view regarding the AR-10.
Providing a secure base for shooting is the fundamental and desired feature of a bipod. A bipod lets you experience a shot like you’re using a bench or a range bag.
Even in the most rough and uneven terrain, it is intended to let you take a shot quite relaxed.
For medium and long-range shooting, a bipod is ideal. If the condition becomes worse, it may even be used for close-range fire.
With a rotating swivel & flexible legs, bipods enable you to quickly turn your weapon. This enables you to preserve your place and keeps you from changing your position as you amend your objective or goal. When you have to fire moving objects, these features come in handy.
When you are lying prone, a bipod is very convenient since it levels the rifle with your shoulder, without the need for any base support such as range or duffel bags.
In comparison, a bipod creates a plain and sturdy shooting platform that does not need frequent changes. Thus, rather than fiddling with modifications, it helps you to concentrate on your shots.
Wear and tear Cover
The bipod’s other very intrinsic function is that it prevents your rifle to a degree from wear and tear. Novice shooters may use trees, bricks, leaves, or some other other makeshift surface to place on their weapon to fire when on a hunting trip.
In conjunction with the recoil of the weapon, the rugged surface of such surfaces results in significant harm to the stock.
Typically used for long-range firing, the AR-10 is an efficient and precise weapon. The usage of a bipod for an AR-10 increases its precision and overall efficiency substantially.
In addition, it often takes a large amount of weight from the forehand of the gunman, resulting in greater performance.
Are Bipods all the same?
Actually not. In features, bipods vary. For a certain set of shooters, some may come in handy, while some might not.
But this depends on your own choice and the usage of your AR-10. A few variables that separate certain bipods from others are found below.
Removable Legs & Length Adjustment
Not all bipods have legs which are flexible. An significant characteristic of a bipod are the flexible legs. Imagine hunting in the woods and attempting to locate a stable spot to stabilise your arms at just the right height.
Often you’ll notice your bipod resting on a big target like a huge fallen tree, and sometimes you’ll find a low object like a small rock.
Making changes to the legs of your bipod helps you to reach a flawless shooting spot.
In comparison, depending on the condition or choice, a bipod with interchangeable legs allows you a broader variety of use.
Most bipods have just two locking positions: one vertical and one horizontal, while others have several locking positions, or even customizable ones.
Some bipods also facilitate positioning at a 45-degree angle forward or backward.
Lean and Pan With Lock
Some bipods enable customizable features of tilt and pan locking, allowing you to lock your bipod in a particular shooting spot.
When you fire from behind twisted cover, such as bushes or shrubs, this can come in handy.

Aspects to remember when Buying a New Bipod
When purchasing a new bipod, there are several variables you need to remember. They include:
Longevity & Weight
Although there are a number of options available on the market, metal composites, especially aluminum-based bipods, are the most popular ones to be purchased.
However a bipod must be reasonably strong to survive rigorous usage and the recoil of your AR-10. The 7.62-calibre ammunition is used for the AR-10, which delivers quite a lot of jerk back. The bipod should also be lightweight, apart from this.
The AR-10 is commonly used for big game hunting, which involves a fair amount of hiking. A lightweight bipod means that your rifle doesn’t add a tonne of weight to keep your bipod from being used.
A Picatinny rail platform is used in most AR-10s, although some include some old-fashioned handguards. A decent bipod must be ready for usage, right out of the pack, and the mounting base should match snugly.
Although there are several adapters and other mounting solutions, the strongest is ready to use equipment. QD mounts are stronger than the ones for assembly that need screws and lugs.
Pan and Cant Feature
You must be able to pan and cant through the axis/mounting point by a strong bipod, so you can easily adjust your target.
Without the weapon wobbling much the pan and cant features allow the shooter to adjust the target steadily. When you are chasing small game, this often prevents valuable time.
Height and Sling Mount should be flexible
The adjustable heights of most bipods vary from as low as 3-9 inches to as much as 25-62 inches (like video bipods). Before picking one you must determine your expected usage and individual choice.
But it’s important to have a bipod with an adjustable height. In addition, an added sling mount can support the weapon in adding slings.
If you are not using the bench rest, a bipod tends to give support to your weapon and offers a nice shooting surface. It must be simple to attach/detach a good bipod, have interchangeable parts (height, pan, canting), and must be lightweight.
Before selecting a bipod with a combination of certain advanced features for your AR-10, you must thoroughly consider your specific specifications and preferences.
In-depth review of the Best AR-10 bipod: ACCU-TAC HD-50
ACCU-TAC has done it again. After extensive development, field tests and optimization, they have brought out a Best AR-10 bipod that is worth seeing and the competition will learn to fear: ACCU-TAC Bipod – here with us in the mysqltuner.com test.
The evolution of the Best AR-10 bipod: ACCU-TAC is quite charmingly dominant and claims the place of the best bipod for itself. Justified? We will see.
Enough propaganda, now let’s find out more about it.
The ACCU-TAC bipod weighs 326 grams with integrated mounting (in our case HD-50). That is, compared to the all-time favorite Harris, almost 50 grams less. In addition, the Harris bipod has an integrated mounting, which reduces the weight to about 100 grams.
The heart of the Best AR-10 bipod is made of T6061 aluminum, surrounded by a polymer layer. No spring mechanisms as with the Harris were used, here everything is operated by muscle power. The legs can be folded out with a slight resistance, where they are then locked in place. To close them, the round button on the top has to be pressed once per leg.
This saving not only reduces the weight, but also gives the Best AR-10 bipod a slim design, which guarantees fewer points to get stuck and generally makes the bipod more maintenance free according to the KISS (Keep it simple and Stupid) principle.
The legs are 16cm long and can be extended completely to 26cm. To do so, press the buttons on the upper half while extending the leg. If you don’t need it quite that long, you can choose between six steps in length.
Here you can also see the adjustment of the axis (centered knob). This not only allows you to adjust the Best AR-10 bipod in the lateral position up to 40°, but also offers a horizontal adjustment up to 50° – thus a target tracking possibility. Both can be operated via the rotary knob, whereby target tracking is still possible when the lateral adjustment is locked.
If you have chosen the HD-50 mount, you will be rewarded with an ultra-flat mount which, although it is not mounted as quickly as the other variants, is absolutely bombproof.
Other variants of the integrated mount are Picatinny and A.R.M.S. – if you use KeyMod, you get nothing. No wonder, HD-50 is the ACCU-TAC own competition to KeyMod.
This is what the bipod looks like when retracted from the weapon. We especially like the fact that the space behind the Best AR-10 bipod is not affected, as it is the case with the Harris (see video and comparison picture below). The bipod needs two HD-50 places and that’s it, everything else can be gripped very well.
Here again the direct comparison to good old Harris. You can clearly see that the Harris was made for hunting rifles/repeating rifles with the well-known pin in the front. For the AR platforms etc. this pin has to be attached to a Picatinny adapter and then to the gun. Lumpy, heavy, suboptimal.
The best improvement over the Harris is the adjustment knob, which is on the underside with ACCU-TAC, instead of on the back (Harris). This allows the whole hand to be gripped to achieve the desired strength. Harris has a lever as an optional accessory for this, but even with it the operation is very fiddly and anything but fast.
By the way, if you don’t like the feet of the ACCU-TAC, you can use various claws – depending on the surface, they give better grip. This is especially interesting for large caliber weapons with recoil.
In the test so far, we have only shot on level ground and with the AR-15. In this application the ACCU-TAC bipod is extremely good, sitting straight on a regular table you can shoot perfectly with the 26cm total height. The same is true for the lying firing position: Here the 16cm are perfect for shooting flat.
What else did we notice? In contrast to the Harris, the ACCU-TAC bipod, the best ar-10 bipod, when folded out has a very fine play to the front and back. This is where the shooter’s personal preferences come into play: One likes it to be club-tight, the other prefers exactly this slight movement of the weapon when shooting or recoiling.
We think it’s great, because it ensures that the Best AR-10 bipod stays exactly where it was (even on smooth ground). With the Harris we often had the problem in the past that the bipod jumped and therefore subsequent shots had to be completely repositioned. A colleague used to shoot at the target of his partner because the bipod jumped.
