8 Best .40 Cal Pistols

.40 caliber pistols have seen a spike in recent sales, particularly when people are searching for versatile guns that can be used both for shooting and self-defense purposes.

Though it may be hard to locate the right .40 caliber gun, it doesn’t have to be.

All the collected information and guidance you need to find the perfect pistol for your objectives is in our guide below.

Can you find an inexpensive Cal Pistol Quality 40?

There is a widespread misunderstanding that higher-priced guns are infinitely better than cheaper weapons, automatically.

This is not always the case when it comes to .40-cal pistols.

In reality, many inexpensive .40 cal handguns, when opposed to more costly weapons, would still be good quality and made with excellent materials.

Of course, there are also more bells and whistles in pricier guns and could be’ easier’ on paper.

But the fact is that if you aim for a compromise, you will find a decent firearm for your needs and budget.

.40 cal guns are popular because they are durable and cheap, so don’t let anybody convince you that in order to find a good pistol, you have to pay a lot.

When buying a 40 Cal Gun, what do I look for?

When you look for the right .40 cal pistol for your needs, these are the key considerations you should bear in mind.

Accuracy of the Firearm

In selecting a decent .40 cal weapon, this is far and away the most critical factor.

Many factors can influence accuracy: materials in construction, barrel style, handling, comfort, and grip all play a role.

Try to find an effective all-around weapon that will serve you well for years to come and one that is consistent even though you switch types of ammo.

Materials / Design

Best .40 Cal Pistol

Next up is the material used to build the firearm. Many .40 cal pistol frames are constructed of a material consisting of polymer-metal that provides both strength and durability.

This make it possible to get a lightweight pistol that can also withstand any significant abuse.

As this means much greater reliability and accuracy, check to see whether a firearm has a stainless steel slider.

Capacities

Keep the capacity in mind. Some pistols only make for a few rounds until you require a new cartridge, whereas pistols with bigger magazines may shoot more bullets before being interrupted.

Grip

Also critical is the grip. Grip comfort and anti-slip features are crucial, especially if you have sweaty hands or want to make sure that in a stressful moment you don’t lose your pistol.

Things to remember before you purchase a .40 Cal Pistol

Before buying a .40 cal Weapon, here are the main items to remember.

Durability

A good .40 cal gun can last you for a long time and be reliable.

This guarantees that you’ll have the quality of your money and for several years to come you’ll have a reliable firearm.

If you depend on your pistol to operate after getting into trouble, it can even save your life.

What’s the budget?

Inside your budget, you can always try to choose a weapon.

When there are viable and inexpensive alternatives, such as the handguns we mentioned above, getting into severe debt for a new .40 cal pistol is not a smart idea.

Form Of Ammunition

Best .40 Cal Pistol

Some .40 cal handguns accept only certain ammo varieties.

Make sure to pick up a pistol that supports certain rounds if you have any ammunition that you are already planning on buying.

Otherwise, you may make a mistake when you decide to pull the trigger on a purchase!

Range of the pistol

If you intend to carry your firearm to the range, make sure to pick up a .40 cal handgun for your purposes with a decent accurate range.

Some pistols are shorter and safer for self-defense, so if you’re specifically purchasing a protective firearm, remember this as well.

How to Assemble a Pistol with .40 Cal

It doesn’t need to be complicated to assemble a .40 cal pistol.

Here’s a short rundown of the main measures, but for a complete summary and a more comprehensive explanation, check out our guide.

Begin on the slide. Put the barrel into the slide to make sure it is properly aligned.

Next, take the guide rod and the spring. Making sure they’re moving in the same direction as you bring them into the slide and holding your thumb over the top.

This would hold all the parts of the weapon so far intact and tightly oriented easily.

First, take the pistol’s grip and frame and make sure there are no obstructions that might mess with its shooting ability.

Mix up the slide grooves and associated sections, then move all into position toward the pistol’s hammer.

Change the location of the takedown lever to around three o’clock.

Push it out and drop it, check the slide a couple times by pulling on it to make sure it doesn’t slide off and is stable. This is all that there is to it!

Conclusion

Best .40 Cal Pistol

Overall, for taking to the shooting range, any .40 caliber pistol will serve as a self-defense weapon or as a great firearm.

The flexibility and all-around versatility that a .40 caliber pistol will add to your life are matched by few guns.

Hopefully, one of the suggestions above is suitable for your needs. Many thanks for reading!

What readers also ask?

People seem to have a few concerns when it comes to .40 caliber firearms, especially because there are some urban myths spreading every now and then.

Through some descriptive replies, let’s answer these queries so that you can feel informed about .40 caliber pistols and their applications.

What’s the Smallest Pistol in Caliber 40?

Overall, the smallest .40 caliber firearms you can find on the market are the CM9 and PM9 pocket pistols by Kahr.

These are small, easily fit in your palm, and are very simple to use, making them common choices for concealed carriers as protective sidearms or as alternatives.

They are often eligible for their frames in many various content forms, such as polymer, carbon fiber, or stainless steel.

What’s Better: 40 or .45 Cal?

The same projectile styles are used with all styles of round, which are full metal jacket or jacketed hollow point. .40 cal bullets have faster speeds and higher minimum energy, but typically .45 bullets strike harder and have higher maximum energy.

At long ranges, .40 rounds are simpler to be more consistent with, but both are decent at short range. .40 cal bullets have less recoil as well.

Overall, in many ways, they are quite similar, while .40 cal rounds are a little more flexible and simpler for beginners.

They are also worthwhile, and all in all, one is not necessarily “better” than the other.

Heckler & Koch VP40: New pistol in caliber .40 Smith & Wesson

Heckler & Koch VP40

The North American branch HK-USA of the German HECKLER & KOCH GmbH distributes with immediate effect the new roofless pistol VP40 in the USA.

We have summarized the most important facts about the gun and the technical data for you.

Here in Europe the pistol in .40 S&W will probably not be available before the beginning of 2016.

Before we present the Heckler & Koch VP40 to you, here is a short review: In July 2014 the semi-automatic pistol VP9 was introduced in the USA – it is the first semi-automatic tapless pistol from Heckler & Koch in decades.

The VP9 was celebrated by sport shooters and professional users alike, which is also reflected in the sales figures.

The magazine Guns & Ammo even voted the gun “Handgun of the Year 2014”.

The rifle was presented to the European public at the IWA OutdoorClassics 2015, but under the name SFP9 with two different triggers.

Now to the new weapon Heckler & Koch:

The Heckler & Koch VP40 is in principle identical to the VP9, only the caliber differs from the 9 x 19 mm:

The VP40 is a semi-automatic, cockless recoil loader with modified chainless locking system of the Browning type.

It has a reinforced black plastic grip with extended picatinny rail according to MIL-STD-1913 and four segments under a dust cover (160 g) for accessories such as lamps, lasers and sights.

Performance is not affected.

The grip has non-slip ribbing at the front, back and sides, recesses for the fingers at the front and interchangeable grip cups and grip backs so that the weapon adapts to the hand of any shooter.

The disassembly lever is located only on the left side of the grip and is the only control element of the VP40 that cannot be operated with both hands.

The breech locking lever can be operated from both sides and the magazine eject button consists – as a typical German design – of a flat lever on both sides of the rear lower part of the trigger guard.

This contributes to the fact that the weapon can be operated and fired extremely well with both hands.

The dovetail sight has three white dots and sits on a matt black, milled stainless steel slide, which is protected against corrosion by a carbon nitride coating.

The front and rear grip grooves in the slide allow a quick check of the cartridge chamber and easier handling.

The patented HK loading aid makes the handling of the sled smoother and easier during reloading and when removing jams.

Heckler & Koch VP40

The very light cocking trigger has a trigger resistance of 20 to 25 Newton, a trigger travel of 6 mm and a return travel of 3 mm.

The rear end of the firing pin group is painted bright red.

When the weapon is cocked, it protrudes a little over the rear part of the slide, so that it can be checked both visually and by touch whether the weapon is cocked or not.

In addition to the cocking trigger, there is a firing pin safety and a trigger guard.

Apart from that, the VP40 has no manual safety.

The Heckler & Koch VP40 has a capacity of 10+1 or 13+1 cartridges in caliber .40 Smith & Wesson.

It uses a double row metal magazine with a plastic base. Like the VP9/SFP9, the Heckler & Koch VP40 is compatible with the magazines of the Heckler & Koch P30.

This means that shooters or firefighters who already use a .40 caliber P30 can also use their magazines.

The semi-automatic Heckler & Koch VP40 is 186.5 mm long, 33.5 mm wide, 138.5 mm high and weighs almost 820 g with an empty magazine.

The 104 mm long barrel has a polygonal profile and has six clockwise rotating slides (1:9.8″) – more than enough to stabilize any .40 Smith & Wesson caliber bullet.

The Heckler & Koch VP40 in .40 Smith & Wesson caliber is already available on the US market.

The manufacturer’s recommended retail price is 719 dollars.

A special package for law enforcement officers offers a tritium night sight and three instead of two magazines and costs 819 dollars.

So far, nothing is known about the availability and price of the semi-automatic Heckler & Koch VP40 in caliber .40 Smith & Wesson outside the USA.

However, given that the SFP9 has only been available in Europe since March 2015, i.e. 6 months after its introduction in the USA, it is to be expected that it will probably take at least until early 2016 for it to be exported.

Beretta APX: The brand new semi-automatic multi-caliber pistol

Beretta APX

World premiere at IDEX 2015: Beretta presented the APX – the new semi-automatic pistol in the calibers 9 x 19, 9 x 21 mm IMI and .40 Smith & Wesson for official and sporting use.

At all4shooters.com you can already find out the details:

The new semi-automatic multi-caliber pistol from Beretta is finally here!

Ever since the company introduced the semi-automatic sub-compact pistol BU-9 Nano for concealed carrying a few years ago, rumors have been circulating:

The next system for service and defense pistols by Beretta should not be based on one of the company’s well-tried concepts, but on a completely new idea.

Beretta’s new APX pistol has now been presented at IDEX 2015.

IDEX is the most important international trade fair and conference for defense, which takes place only every two years in Abu Dhabi (UAE).

Beretta showed there for the first time the final version of its long awaited new semi-automatic pistol system for sport shooting, and professional use as a service pistol by police, military and private security services.

So far, Beretta has provided the following information about the new semi-automatic pistol:

The Beretta APX is based on an ergonomically shaped, fiber-reinforced plastic grip, thus responding to the demand for a very specific type of function in the current market for semi-automatic weapons.

The case was equipped with a “Picatinny” rail according to MIL-STD-1913 for tactical accessories.

In addition, in accordance with today’s standards, the weapon has interchangeable grip backs with grip cups for better adaptability to different hand sizes, making it suitable for shooters of all ages, genders, sizes and statures.

Beretta APX

The new APX differs significantly from the Beretta 92 series: unlike its predecessor, the Beretta 951, it is not equipped with a Walther-type drop barrel or the rotation lock of the newer Px4 Storm series from Beretta, but instead has a significantly simplified Browning locking system.

It can only be disassembled when unloaded: Using the opening on the grip, a special tool can be used to release the weapon before it can be disassembled by operating a left-handed lever above the trigger guard.

The light cocking trigger has a trigger weight of 2.8 kg, a trigger travel of 6 mm and a reset of 3 mm.

The Beretta APX is a roofless pistol with a firing pin whose end piece protrudes slightly from a round opening at the rear of the slide: a visual and tactical backdrop to the concept.

The breech of the Beretta APX is made of stainless steel and has a nitride coating at the factory.

This provides anti-reflection coating, scratch resistance and corrosion resistance.

Generously dimensioned front and rear carriage ribs allow easy manual clamping and chamber checks.

Three-point rear sight/front sight are attached to the carriage and feature a unique patented adjustment system.

The standard version of the semi-automatic Beretta APX does not have any manual safety devices, but has a Glock-style trigger safety and a redundant firing pin/fall safety.

A manual safety system is available on request in the form of a lever mounted on the handle in two positions.

The APX has been designed to be extremely left-handed. It is equipped with a double-sided magazine release and a proprietary double-sided opening/closing lever.

Beretta APX

The Beretta APX is powered by a double-row magazine made of black metal with a plastic recoil cap, which holds 17 rounds in caliber 9 x 19 mm (9 mm “Luger”, 9 mm “Parabellum”, 9 mm NATO), and 15 rounds in caliber 9 x 19 IMI (9 “Italian”) and .40 Smith & Wesson.

The total length of the APX in the standard version is 192 mm, the barrel length is 108 mm.
