You are in the proper spot if you’re hunting for the perfect left-handed AR-15 rifle.

Yeah, we realize how difficult it can be for a dominant lefty attempting to fire an AR-15 built for a gunman with a right hand.

If you are carrying daily you should think about getting a Concealed Carry Insurance. Also check out our Guide for the Best AR-15 Rifles or the Best Taurus G2C Upgrades.

Many weapons makers are taking it upon themselves to develop ambidextrous components to address this issue. Yet what about special rifles?

Indeed, in an attempt to support left-handed shooters they still exist.

But weapons such as the seven that we will mention below are produced specifically for those left-handed.

Requires virtually no ambidextrous attachments.

Let’s have a peek at the disparity between ambidextrous, left-handed and right-handed weapons before we get to our chart.

We’ll also give you a short tutorial about how to pick your own left-handed AR-15 rifle.

Ambidextrous versus Right-Handed versus Left-handed

There are various types of rifles and accessories for shooters of all kinds, no matter which hand they are most dominant.

Some are either hand exclusive and others can fit both.

So where do they differ from each other?

What are the Benefits? Any drawbacks?

Let us address certain questions so you know what separates them from each other:

Right-Handed shooters

Next, you’ll find the upper receiver of an AR-15 should guide the ejector port to the right.

This may pose a safety hazard for left-handed shooters because after it’s fired, the magazine casings move out of the ejector port.

You don’t want a piece of metal striking you in the face at high speed or, worse, your leg.

And, after they’re released, those discarded shells get pretty dang hot so the chance of burns would be a concern.

Left-Handed Shooters

Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifles

The distinction with this form is the port of the ejector would be on the upper receiver’s left hand side.

Similarly, this will also affect precision and performance for those typically shooting right-handed.

It will also pose the same risk of being injured by the ejection of discarded rounds from the port.

Many of the parts mounted on an AR-15 ‘s lower receiver would include ambidextrous attachments, such as safeties. This can be turned on by clicking any way on the protection pad.

Ambidextrous Shooters

Ambidextrous is defined as use of both hands. It doesn’t even matter, whether left or right.

Like safety, the ambidextrous parts will be much easier to install as compared to a safety designed for either handed shooter.

For left-handed shooters, though, most ambidextrous accessories will be a bigger benefit.

That assumes the only downside would be that right-handed shooters would avoid the possibility of having certain kinds of devices as most left-handed shooters don’t have the challenges.

And they’re not feeling the need to have them.

How to choose an AR-15 with left hand focus

Before making a decision on a left-handed AR-15 firearm to be yours, understanding a few considerations that will motivate you to make the final buying decision is essential.

Plus, you’ll have to think about the fact that this is an AR-15 rifle that you’ll likely rely on in the long run.

So choosing wisely is always paramount.

Here are a few things we recommend you look for before making your choice to help you in the process:

Price of the Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifles

Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifles

If you’re a first-time customer or someone who’s on a budget constantly, the quality would most definitely play a major role.

When you look at the size, remember the overall cost of the weapon itself.

High quality but what you are searching for is inexpensive.

Most will associate low quality to a low price tag. But choosing the highest model weapon you can afford requires a bit of work.

Or a Project to Build yourself the Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifle?

By constructing it piece by piece, the simplest way to construct a left-handed AR-15 weapon is means getting the pieces you need to make sure they are adaptable for left-handed shooters.

That would also mean that components and devices for ambidextrous use should be made usable.

Obviously, more left-hand users would benefit from ambidextrous protection devices and upper receivers than right-hand users.

Alternatively, you can buy an already assembled and ready for action AR-15 too.

You can still use one, in either way. The main distinction is the sum of money and effort you placed into it.

Conception of the Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifles

Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifles

Please pay careful attention to the layout.

Particularly while you are searching for an AR-15 weapon especially built for shooters with left hands.

Be sure that the ejector port is on the other hand side, so that it does not easily eject rounds and strike the face during the process.

The important thing to note is that at your local gun store you may not find an AR-15 for the lefties.

That might then entail buying a custom-made rifle, which would cost more money.

Best to buy one at a range of online arms shops.

Alternatively, if you’re up for the task, you might purchase a construction kit.

Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifles – Analysis

Below are seven of the better left handed AR-15 weapons on the market today.

Be sure to remember some of the features and functions when you check each of them.

Is the investment worth the expense? Is it looking solid?

These are a sample of the long list of questions you will be answering as your search advances.

In the meantime, let’s start with our list by unveiling the left-handed AR-15 rifle ‘best overall’:

Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifle Accessory

This accessory for AR-15 lefthanders is the best option among anyone wanting to develop their left-handed AR-15 weapon from the ground up.

Yeah, while an upper receiver is important, a lower receiver is important too.

The Aero Precision AR-15 Ambidextrous Lower Receiver is our best choice for a left-hand lower one.

This item will fit for uppers that have 5.56-caliber chambered barrels.

So chances are a goodlike the Stag Arms AR-15 Complete Upper Receiver will work well.

This is made of super durable , high quality aluminum. It can take on a lot of abuse, in plain English.

For a rifle that has the ability to fire powerful shots quickly, it can handle large quantities of rounds and the recoil that goes with them.

This includes a black anodized coating, for extra intensity.

Because it’s made in the USA, you know it’s got to be of top quality.

Most America’s gun manufacturers won’t settle for anything less than the best when it comes to stringent quality standards.

This reciever will fit most modules with drop-in triggers.

So if you’re planning to find one that will give you a crisp, no-creep kind of shooting, the investment is worth that lower receiver.

You should find a trigger assembly whilst we’re at it that will give you a light, smooth pull.

Because the pull is smoother the faster you get a shot off.

Timing is everything, no matter the application.

Returning to course, this lower receiver is an ambidextrous lower one that will benefit most left-handed shooters.

It’s actually as close as you can to anything that’s remotely left-handed.

Verdict: Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifle Accessory

The Aero Precision Ambidextrous Lower Receiver is probably the only reliable lower that fits left-handed shooters on the market.

If your goal is to build outright a left-handed AR-15 rifle, you will obviously need the right type of parts to accommodate you.

A lower receiver is what you will need to house the trigger assembly and all the parts needed to support the functioning of your rifle.

So why not choose something like the lower Aero Precision to give you a feeling that is nearest to left-handedness?

Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifle

Next we’ll have a peek at the Tactical Stag 15L.

This weapon is offered in either the NATO caliber 5.56 or the caliber .223.

Whatever you like, you ‘re going to love to get a gun that won’t throw you problems just because you’re a left-handed gunman.

The pistol barrel has a 1:7 curve, rendering it a very accurate weapon capable of firing with perfect accuracy.

What ever the aim, it’s good enough for you to reach the bullseye.

It is rated at 16 inches, and has a system of carbine power.

The safety option is intended for left-handed shooters (and nothing else), and you may be confused if you are hoping for anything that has an ambidextrous safety instead.

It comes complete with a magazine containing 30 bullets.

You’ll barely have enough rounds to carry you through the day when you’re looking for the targets of the big game.

However, having spare magazines handy is always good if you’re out in the field or if you’re spending the day at the range.

It doesn’t seem like too little or too many for most shooters to have so many shots.

If you’re searching for a high-quality weapon made with high-quality parts and hardware, the Stag 15L Tactical could be just what you’re searching for in an AR-15 firearm for left handers.

Verdict: Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifle

The Stag 15L is the left-handed reaction to their Stag 15 weapon signature by the producer.

Today, left-handed shooters share the same combat environment and rewards long gained by their right-handed counterparts.

This is a multi-purpose rifle that is typically used in shooting, home defence, or target practice.

No matter what the aim is, left-handed shooters would no longer have to think about problems of precision or something else that they have struggled with for a long time when attempting to fire with a right-handed weapon.

2nd Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifle Accessory

A new Stag 15L rifle is next on the list. We’ll have a peek at the SL SBR this time. Stag Arms rifles have long been the strongest in terms of performance and efficiency.

If these are two of your top priorities, than you might want to pay special attention to this model (or some of the other Stag brand firearms on this list).

One of the items you can find straight away is that it has a handguard which is free-floating.

This is considered one of the greatest modifications on an AR-style weapon to use.

That’s because free-floating handguards not only considerably improve your accuracy, they ‘re also designed to provide you with faster heat dissipation.

A warehouse of the Magpul CTR is also provided.

The stock is made from a material made of polymer which makes it very robust.

This should help raising the vibration and allow you full power over your weapon in the process.

If you have less recoil and better control your shots will always be accurate.

Your left-hand safety button and your 30-count PMAG magazine are both used on the rifle itself.

Stag is so sure that they stand by a lifetime guarantee of their rifles that they last a long time.

And if you’re hunting for a weapon that will not guide your wrong down the path for years or even decades, it could be yours to own the Stag 15L SL SBR weapon.

Verdict: 2nd Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifle Accessory

This gun can be your best buddy for as long as you live if you want to keep precision to a high level.

Thanks to the polymer Magpul buttstock, the free-floating rail and the ability to give you full control over your rifle will surely give you consistent, accurate shots each time you pull the trigger.

Around the same time it is high in weight and over the span of several years it can handle a ton of poundings.

If you’re hunting for the last AR-15 rifle you’ll ever have to purchase for a long time, you will be insane not to give a good look to this Stag 15L rifle.

3rd Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifle: Stag 15L Bones

Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifles

Pros

  • Solid materials
  • Fits almost every Free-floating handrails
  • Comes in a case for protection

Cons

  • None

3rd Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifle

Now for the best valuyou can geth, we ‘re going to look at the best left-handed AR-15 rifle.

If you’re on a budget and want a product that will be reliable regardless of application, the Stag 15L Bones is something that deserves to be looked at more closely.

What makes it the greatest weapon that most budgets can afford?

It’s customisable for one.

The stock is adjustable, for example, since it contains a six-position buffer pipeline.

If you’re small in height or a big-and-tall kind of shooter, this will suit any shooter.

AR-15 shooters also strive for versatility as one of the key attributes.

They want something uniquely appropriate to them.

Why settle for more of a “one-size-fits-all” type of rifle?

Around the same time, by attaching your preferred lens or optic you will tailor it to your wishes.

Moreover, a good, free-floating handguard looks nice on that.

That’s going to have the game up specific quite a bit.

The barrel has a twist rate of 1:7, when speaking of precision.

Many barrels with this kind of ratio should be more reliable than other twist-rated weapons.

These will work with rounds weighing between about 55-grain and about 70-grain.

If you have a couple bullets of that weight that you’re waiting to shoot off, then this is definitely the weapon you ‘re going to like.

If you are on a cap, this product is your best choice for a left-handed AR-15.

Even if you have money to play about with, for the customizability and hard to match results, you’ll want that gun.

Anyway, Stag’s Bones AR-15 gun will stick out from the others.

The question is: how are you going to personalize that?

Verdict: 3rd Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifle

The Bones are, as predicted, the kind of weapon that goes beyond the norms of an AR-15 budget weapon.

Customizable and better suited for shooters with left hands?

How can you handle this? If you want a rifle to customize it to your advantage, the Stag 15L Bones could be the rifle you want to own.

Buying this one is the first step toward a custom left-handed AR-15 rifle.

Find the hardware that you want to mount on it until you have it, and be ready to go.

2nd Best Left Handed AR-15 Accessory: Stag Arms – AR-15 Complete 3 Gun Elite Upper Receiver

Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifles

Pros

  • Makes very accurate shots possible
  • Super durable
  • Great for left-handed shooters

Cons

  • None

2nd Best Left Handed AR-15 Accessory

Next, we’ll look at the left-hand upper one, which is the best fit for an AR-15 rifle.

We get it, maybe you don’t want an absolute left-handed AR-15.

You ‘re probably more of the type of building. And if that is the case we ‘re not going to blame you.

We’re really going to congratulate you for bringing things into your own hands.

The Stag Arms AR-15 Full 3 Gun Elite Upper Receiver is a perfect option if you’re searching for an outstanding top receiver to transform your rifle into a left handed weapon.

This should suit better on NATO 5.56 caliber weapons.

The first thing you’ll remember is that it has a completely fluted 18 inch length.

This means that heat dissipation is quick, and debris is easy to clean from the barrel.

Made of 1:8 barrel twist stainless steel, this would be the ideal modification or extension to every project if you’re trying to get full precision out of it.

This upper receiver has a gas system in the style of a rifle but the gas block is low profile itself.

The handguard is a 16 inch long, M-LOK style.

It would also allow you the ability to customize your weapon to fit your needs.

So if you have a scope or an optic you ‘re willing to try, you’re going to want an upper receiver that can accommodate that.

The Stag Arms product is definitely something that will be up for the challenge.

Verdict: 2nd Best Left Handed AR-15 Accessory

If you’re more of a builder then you will definitely need the right parts to make your project a big success.

Building a rifle can be a challenge, no matter whether it is for the righteous or the lefts.

But if you’re looking for an excellent accessory that’s best designed for the left shooter like yourself, it might be the first thing to start with this Stag Arms AR-15 Complete Upper Receiver.

3rd Best Left Handed AR-15 Accessory: Phase 5 Tactical – AR-15/M16 Ambidextrous Charging Handle

Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifles

Pros

  • Great feel in your hand
  • Super high quality
  • Compatible with most AR-15 rifles

Cons

  • Sharp edges

3rd Best Left Handed AR-15 Accessory

Next, we’ll look at the Phase 5 AR-15 / M16 Tactical Ambidextrous Charging Handle.

It is the ideal upgrade you ought to get if you want a handle that better serves left-handed shooters.

And because this is an ambidextrous charging handle, we are again supplying you with a portion which is known to be the nearest thing you can get to left-handed.

It is constructed of high-quality titanium, which ensures it would be strong and can withstand rough and rugged application.

Expect this to last you a long time, as it is stronger than normal handles for storing.

The charging handle is provided to give you a more positive charge while using your AR-15, especially when using one designed to keep your weapon in place, in times when you need it most (such as a competitive shooting competition).

It has so large touch points that you can quickly control the weapon if you so desire.

Verdict: 3rd Best Left Handed AR-15 Accessory

The Phase 5 Charging Handle is probably what you want to add to your new AR-15 build if you’re looking for a product that’s going to be reliable and last you a long time.

This would also act as an acceptable substitute for the other left-handed AR-15 weapons which currently exist.

Either way, you get something that is beefy in size and that will help make your firing ability much more reliable.

4th Best Left Handed AR-15 Accessory: Troy Industries, Inc. – AR-15/M16 Ambidextrous Magazine Release

Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifles

Pros

  • Great for lefties
  • Quick magazine release
  • Sits very still and doesn’t wiggle

Cons

  • Installation a bit tougher

4th Best Left Handed AR-15 Accessory

Finally, we’ll look at the best left-handed mag release on the market right now.

The Troy Industries company gives us our mag release of preference.

Your magazine will get malfunctioning from time to time. Yeah, it does happen.

But what if you want a quick and reliable mag-release?

What if you choose anything that lets you free your magazine quickly and substitute it with a spare part?

You will find it in Release of the AR-15 / M16 Ambidextrous Magazine.

This is an easy-to-install magazine release that will work like an accessory your normal factory has made.

It will work even better, without interfering with any ambidextrous releases of bolts.

This is the closest release to a full-blown left-handed release that you can get.

So if you’re searching for a mag release that will help you most and save you time and energy, this ambidextrous magazine release might be the best choice for your current AR-15 build.

This pup is solidly built and is relatively robust.

In reality this is the type of magazine release you ‘d see in most guns of military or tactical design.

Built tough and able to cope with extreme conditions, you have a magazine release that works when you need it most.

Verdict: 4th Best Left Handed AR-15 Accessory

Nothing makes an AR-rifle more effective than a quick-fired magazine update.

Magazines are likely to turn out poorly. In a game, or a hard day at the range, the extra mags would be needed elsewhere.

Either way, you’ll need a magazine release that will give you more time and speed to slide into a new, freshly loaded magazine that will let the mags fall free without jamming.

When you’re searching for time saves and quick magazine charging, this magazine release should do the trick for your left handed AR-15 rifle.

Cautious feelings before buying one of the Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifle

Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifles

For cases like these, there are few extra things to remember when you’re shopping for a suitable left-handed AR-15 rifle.

There are issues to be cautious of as they apply to the legitimacy of purchasing and possessing an AR-15 rifle.

Understanding these factors will spare you much energy , resources and even long-term legal problems. Here’s what you should know:

Legality of the Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifles

There are firearms control regulations in almost a dozen Jurisdictions.

States such as California, Illinois, Maryland, New York, New Jersey and a few more have recently enacted AR-15 gun regulations.

They will differ from each other, though, in terms of what you can or can’t use on an AR-15 rifle for parts or accessories.

For example, no AR-style rifle barrel should be less than 16 inches in length in the State of New York.

Based on the state in which you reside, see whether all of the above weapons or attachments conform with the laws of your Country.

You should also double check to see which laws exist in your jurisdiction if you want to err on the side of caution.

That way, you ‘re not going to face any legal consequences.

The Remaining Issues with the Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifles

In order to buy a semi-automatic rifle like an AR, you’ll have to be at least 18 years old nationwide.

You must not of course either be a registered criminal or having a history of being treated for medical purposes.

An AR-15 weapon should be used safely only for uses which are acceptable.

Bottom line: Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifles

Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifles

It can be a challenge to find the best left-handed AR-15 Rifle.

But the right one is for you out there. You may create one from scratch, as an alternative.

Any way, left-handed shooters will enjoy the notion that there are all the correct components and modifications to make firing an AR-15 even more fun.

So consider which route is easier for you and make for you and your fellow left-handed shooters to enjoy your next trip to the range or the hunting field.

Eye Predominance Tests Left or Right AR-15

One of the first points to check as a beginner in shotgun shooting is eye dominance.

This is important, because in clay pigeon shooting it is best to shoot with two open eyes.

This has a significant impact on choosing one of the Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifles for you.

Ideally, the stock should be on the same side of the shoulder as the dominant eye.

You can determine your eye dominance with one of the following tests:

Thumb-peep test

  • You can quickly and easily determine your own eye dominance using the thumb-peep test:
  • Stand upright and look at an object at least five metres away (tree, light switch etc.) at eye level.
  • Frontal alignment to the object – do not stand with one shoulder closer to the object than the other.
  • Extend one arm, cover the object with your thumb.
  • When extending the arm, be careful not to turn the corresponding shoulder slightly towards the object.
  • Alternately close the left eye, then the right eye.
  • In one case the thumb will no longer be on top of the object, but next to it.

When closing the non-dominant eye, the image does not change, since the retinal image of the dominant eye is more strongly evaluated by our brain anyway.

If, on the other hand, you close your dominant eye, your thumb will no longer be directly above the selected object, since there will then no longer be a combination of images in which the impressions of the dominant eye predominate.

This test quickly and easily shows beginners their dominant eye and is one of the most popular methods for determining eye dominance to choose one of the Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifles.

Hand bearing test

  • Another method to determine your own eye dominance is the hand bearing test:
  • Stand upright and look at an object (tree, light switch, etc.) at eye level at least five meters away.
  • Frontal alignment to the object – do not stand with one shoulder closer to the object than the other.
  • Extend both arms and form a small viewing window with the palms of your hands and thumbs.
  • The thumb and fingers are on top of each other.
  • Use both eyes to grasp the object through the viewing window.
  • Slowly move the viewing window towards your face while continuing to aim at the object.
  • The eye in front of which you are guiding the window is your dominant eye
  • Check this variant:
  • Enter the object again through the window described above.
  • Alternately close the left eye, then the right eye.
  • When the dominant eye is closed, the object disappears from the window

This variant also shows that our vision with both eyes is not an equivalent combination of the images of the right and left eye.

We will lead our window of vision without thinking in front of the eye whose impressions predominate when we see with both eyes.

Ring bearing test to choose one of the Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifles

  • This method works similar to the hand bearing test described above. Instead of forming the window with the hands, here a sheet of paper is used to help.
  • Cut a 1-2 centimeter hole in the middle of a sheet of paper (Din A4).
  • Stand upright at eye level and look at an object (tree, light switch etc.) at least five metres away.
  • Frontal alignment to the object – do not stand with one shoulder closer to the object than the other.
  • Extend both arms and hold the paper.
  • Through the hole in the paper, grasp the object with both eyes.
  • Slowly move the paper towards your face while continuing to aim at the object through the hole.
  • The eye in front of which you lead the hole is your dominant eye

Pipe bearing test

Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifles
  • Roll a tube from a sheet of paper (or use the cardboard tube of a kitchen roll)
  • Stand upright with a view to an object (tree, light switch etc.) at least five metres away at eye level.
  • Frontal orientation to the object – do not stand with one shoulder closer to the object than the other.
  • Search for the object through the tube
  • The eye in front of which you place the pipe is your dominant eye

Eye dominance in shooting the Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifles

The above tests illustrate how much the retinal images of our two eyes can differ from each other.

Thus, the target should always be acquired via the dominant eye when clay pigeon shooting, otherwise the “jumping around” of the field of vision experienced in the test occurs when following the clay pigeon target and prevents an optimal execution of movement (and thus often the hit).

Similar to the handiness, eye dominance occurs statistically more frequently on the right side.

Accordingly, most shooters are right-handed with a pronounced right eye dominance.

Optimal target acquisition with the right eye when using the shotgun on the right side of the body is therefore not a problem.

Equivalent vision with both eyes is a statistical peculiarity. In less than 5% of the participants examined in various studies for eye dominance, no clear dominant eye could be detected.

There are also no consequences for shotgun sports.

Cross dominance

Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifles

The term cross dominance describes the dominance relationship of the so-called “handedness” and “eye-ness”.

Accordingly, left-handers with a right dominant eye are described as cross dominant and right-handers with a left eye dominance.

Cross dominance has the disadvantage for the shooter that when the shotgun is right-handed, the target is hit with the left eye.

In shotgun sport there are therefore different strategies for dealing with cross dominance:

By masking the dominant eye on the shooting glasses with an almost transparent sticker, the shooter can capture the target with both eyes.

The sticker on the glasses ensures that the dominant eye gives the “guidance” to the weaker eye.

The dominant eye can remain open so that peripheral vision (important for spatial awareness when grasping the target) is maintained.

Alternatively, the eye can be closed. That’s all important when choosing the Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifles.

If you want to shoot with two open eyes in spite of cross dominance, you must learn to strike on the side of the dominant eye.

Can eye dominance be retrained?

Cross dominant shooters in particular often look for ways to “correct” their dominant eye, i.e. retrain it.

However, a change in eye dominance is not something that can be achieved by a few weeks of specific training.

Similarly, it is not impossible that an attempt to shift the dominant eye does not lead to general difficulties in grasping the target.

Therefore, it is generally not recommended for sport shooters to change their own eye dominance, especially when you got used to your Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifle.

Left-handed AR-15 shooting

Michelangelo painted with his left hand, and Isaac Newton also preferred his left hand to his right.

The list of famous left-handed painters is long.

Nevertheless, they were long regarded as exotics, who are said to be musically gifted and extraordinarily creative, but also clumsy and awkward.

All just prejudices, say the scientists.

What is certain is that the so-called handiness is predetermined by nature.

But what becomes of it depends crucially on socialization.

Plato and the left-handed

Archaeological finds such as hand wedges and spears prove it: in the Stone Age there were far more left-handed people than today.

Researchers assume that at least half of all people did the important things with their left hand.

Even the Greek philosopher Plato (427 to 347 B.C.) was concerned with the phenomenon of handedness.

His thesis: Just as there is no difference in mobility between the feet and the lower limbs, humans are naturally able to use both hands equally.

What speaks against this is that animals also prefer one side.

The fiddler crabs, for example, which live on tropical coasts, always have a large and a smaller pair of scissors.

According to studies by American researchers, free-living chimpanzees also prefer one side.

The scientists observed the monkeys fishing for termites and found that most of them used their left hand for this purpose.

Specialization also seems to make sense because it is much more effective to concentrate the force on one side. In the animal kingdom, however, the preference for the left or right hand balances each other out.

With humans it is different. It is estimated that between 10 and 25 percent of the world’s population is left-handed.

Of righteous citizens who stand up with their left foot

Many left-handers still fight with prejudices.

These are also reflected in the language: even today, anyone who has two left hands is considered clumsy.

And even the saying “I do that with my left hand” does not cast a good light on this hand.

In other words, when things get difficult, it is better to use the right hand.

If you stand up with your left foot, you are in a bad mood.

Righteous citizens, on the other hand, wear their hearts in the right place.

Even in ancient times, the left side did not come off well. From the left side came the bad prophecies and also the realm of the dead lay on this side.

So in some cultures this world view can still be seen at the origin of the two words.

The Latin term for right is “dexter”, which means skill.

The French word “dexterité” and the English expression “dexterity” can also be traced back to this.

The word for left was called “sinistrum” by the Romans and can also be translated as “threatening”.

The French word “sinistre” and the Spanish “siniestro” were derived from it.

Mystery not yet solved

But where does it come from that there are people who prefer to use the left hand instead of the right?

Even if the final cause is still unexplored, the genes are in any case of special importance.

The probability that two right-handed people will have a left-handed child is only two percent.

However, if one parent is left-handed, the probability rises to 17 percent.

In contrast, if two left-handed parents are left-handed, the chances are almost 50 to 50 that the offspring will also be born left-handed.

The role of the brain & The Best Left Handed AR-15 Rifles

In addition to the hereditary factors, the two hemispheres of the brain also play an important role in dexterity.

Different areas of the brain are responsible for different skills such as speech, motor skills or spatial thinking.

As a rule, the movements and activities performed with the left hemisphere of the body are controlled from the right hemisphere of the brain and vice versa.

In almost all right-handed people, the speech centre is located in the left part of the brain.

In two thirds of left-handed people, this centre is also located on the left side.

The remaining third is divided into two halves:

While some have their speech center on the right side, in others this task is performed by both halves of the brain.

This results in two things: Firstly, left-handedness is not just a simple inversion of right-handedness, and secondly, the speech centre can also develop independently of handiness.

However, this is the exception rather than the rule.

In the meantime, the thesis has become generally accepted that language and dexterity are located together on one side of the brain.

Many scientists assume that the arrangement of the areas in the brain has also been influenced by evolution.

They believe that gestures are the origin of language.

Because of the close connection between these two areas, researchers therefore assume that the centres for speech and dexterity are located on one and the same side of the brain, because this means that the paths and therefore also the reaction times are shorter.

The responsibilities in the hemispheres could then also be the reason why retrained left-handed people repeatedly report speech and concentration disorders, some also suffer from motor deficits.

This is explained, among other things, by an incorrect load on the responsible regions during retraining. These disorders also occur when retraining from the right to the left side.

What role do molecules play?

However, all this still does not explain why the centres for language and handicap are located on the left side of the brain in one person and on the right side in another.

A now widely accepted explanation for this phenomenon is that of Marion Annett.

The English biologist assumes that one molecule is responsible for the formation of the left hemisphere of the brain.

If this side is more developed, the probability increases that the right hand is more dexterous than the left.

If this factor is missing, however, the scientist’s thesis is that there is no dominant hemisphere.

Therefore, speech and dexterity are distributed randomly and independently of each other to the two hemispheres of the brain.

This is supported by the fact that three quarters of all identical twins are either both left-handed or both right-handed.

But there are exceptions here, too, because in every fourth pair one twin is right-handed and the other left-handed.

So genes seem to play a role, but not the only one.

What is new is a research approach that assumes that left-handedness is part of a further evolutionary stage.

Then the preference of the left hand would be a test of how the two hemispheres of the brain could interact with each other in the future – and left-handed people would be the ones already practicing this today.

If this model were to prove itself, left-handed people might even be outnumbered at some point.

Until then, however, they must continue to establish themselves in a right-handed world.

For many people, this is no longer as difficult as it used to be.

Because an entire industry has now specialized in people who prefer to do everything with their left hand.

From corkscrews to can openers, from computer keyboards to boomerangs: there is hardly an everyday object that is not also turned inside out.

And the custom that men in Japan were allowed to divorce when they discovered that their wife was left-handed is also a long time ago.
