6 Best AR-15 Pistols
Looking for the right Pistol AR-15? If so, you are in the right place.
Might be a struggle for you to choose one.
But if you know what you’re searching for, you don’t have to go through all sorts of legal hurdles & the procedure will be much simpler.
For so many applications this style of pistol has risen in popularity over the years.
Nothing is more rewarding than shooting a pistol that has the AR-15 gun capability.
You ‘re going to be in for quite a surprise if you’re a first time customer.
To get you going, we’ve assembled a collection of six of the best AR-15 handguns on the market as of today.
Before we get to it, we ‘re going to talk about matching AR-15 handguns with AR-15 rifles, and the characteristics and features expected to enter the list.
AR-15 Pistol vs. AR-15 Rifle: You need to learn the distinctions
It’s clear that both AR-15 handguns and AR-15 rifles are distinct.
Moreover, they have some of the same features and parts which help make it function efficiently.
So what are the variations, exactly? Let’s have a look at those so that you can differentiate between the two:
Longitude of the Barrel
We start with the apparent distinction, of course. An AR-15 pistol would have a total length of less than 26 inches, along with a barrel of less than 16 inches.
An AR-15 rifle with a muzzle of 16 inches or greater would be longer.
However, if an AR-15 is over the average mark of 26 inches in weight, it would also be called a rifle irrespective of barrel length.
In certain jurisdictions, legislation would allow barrels not to reach a certain length (i.e.—No rifle barrel can be under 16 inches in length in the State of New York).
The buttstock is just another significant distinction. Obviously, the AR-15 rifle should have a buttstock fitted to it.
In this situation it is deemed to be a Title II weapon pursuant to the 1934 National Firearms Act.
If you’re transforming a gun into a weapon, you ‘re going to have to go through the proper processes and make sure you comply with ATF rules and requirements.
However, an AR-15 pistol is missing from this legsilation.
The nearest thing you can get to an AR-15 pistol on a buttstock is to acquire a brace.
You may even shoulder the brace to imitate a normal buttstock behaviour.
The foregrip is one more distinction. While an AR-15 gun can not have a vertical foregrip it may have an angled one.
In the meantime, an AR-15 rifle could have a vertical foregrip which will enable the user to have greater control over it.
Why We Choose These Top Options
Here is a short description of what we were searching for to handpick the six AR-15 weapons we were testing.
Also, this will be your reference on what to search for. For almost every gun owner of the AR-15 these qualities and features are significant.
And we guarantee that these could be used by just about everyone irrespective of the requirement.
Here’s how to pick an AR-15 gun that is based on the same method we used to rank them:
They need to have barrels calculated at lengths of less than 16 inches to insure they meet the legal criteria of being called a pistol.
And they needed to have a total length of 27 inches.
We always guaranteed they had no buttstocks attached to it.
Using that would render it an SBR, rather than a pistol.
Equipment & Material
Every AR-15 pistol we selected is made of top-quality materials.
The upper and lower receivers, for example, are constructed of aluminum 7075-T6, or equivalent.
This is known to withstand shooting in several numbers.
It can even tolerate a lot of violence, including hitting rough surfaces at high speeds.
Simple to use
Many AR-15 pistols are user friendly due to gun braces that serve as shooter support stocks.
More precisely, we’ve made sure the pistol braces are simple to change and can suit all sorts of shooters irrespective of whether the frame is capable, disabled or height.
These gun braces can also be shouldered so that if you find it is more relaxed firing this way you can comfortably use them as a rest.

To insure you are lawfully permitted to possess and operate an AR-15 gun, it’s necessary to err on the side of caution and study the local and state rules.
It’s also worth remembering that you can also comply with federal rules.
This method, it is easier to escape legal problems than to involuntarily run into them.

Springfield Armory SAINT AR-15 Pistol: compact self loading rifle
In 2016 Springfield Armory introduced the SAINT self loading rifle, a weapon in AR-15 design.
The SAINT AR-15 pistol has the same features and functions as the rifle, including the 5.56 x 45 mm NATO caliber (.223 Rem).
First of all: even if the name might suggest it – the SAINT AR-15 Pistol is not a pistol in the sense of the Weapons Act or general usage.
Because basically it is an ultra-compact self loading rifle in rifle caliber.
Springfield Armory CEO Dennis Reese explains:
“The new SAINT Pistol offers high precision and proven AR-15 performance in the size of a handgun”.
The main difference in appearance is the missing buttstock of the SAINT Pistol.
Instead, it is equipped with a SB Tactical SBX-K forearm strap to reduce the size.
This belt also serves to reduce recoil and improves precision when shooting with one or both hands.
In terms of technical features, the SAINT Pistol has a 7.5-inch long 416 R stainless steel barrel and upper and lower body in forged, hard anodized Type III aluminum 7075 T6.
The barrel is also treated with Melonite, a harder coating than chrome according to the manufacturer.
Springfield Armory SAINT AR-15: a system for close combat
With an overall length of only 673 mm, the SAINT AR-15 Pistol is a handy, versatile weapon that is perfectly suited for close quarter battles (CBQ).
The gas-powered system is based on a direct gas pressure loading system, like the original Stoner Systems AR-10 and then AR-15, and therefore has no piston.
The pistol grip is a Bravo Company Mod 3, the free swinging aluminium handguard was made by M-LOK and changes into a handstop at the front.
The cocking lever is a conventional GI style and the breechblock assembly is described as “improved M16 concept”.
It has been subjected to magnetic particle testing and has a melonite coating.
The muzzle has an interesting blast diverter, whose job it is not only to direct the sound, but also vibration and debris to the target and away from the shooter.
Sights are not included.
The SAINT AR-15 pistol comes with a Magpul PMag Gen 3 magazine for 30 cartridges and costs 989,- US dollars.
SIG Sauer MCX Virtus
A crate full of ammunition and in addition a rifle from which all this could be fired – that was the scenario of an extraordinary shooting attempt.
Read here on mysqltuner.com how the SIG Sauer MCX Virtus coped with its 1,000 shots in a row and without intermediate cleaning.
We once wanted to subject a modern semi-automatic machine to a load test.
We chose the MCX Virtus from SIG Sauer and developed the following idea: 1,000 shots, no maintenance, while all 50 shots were checked for precision, muzzle velocity and case ejection.
Whether a weapons tester can survive such a procedure with its monotonous sequence of shot after shot depends on its endurance and on the fact that it is not deterred by the prospect of a tense neck and a few blisters on its fingers.
(Wait – only one shooter? Read on and you will find out the reason for this).
On the other hand, whether a gun can survive 1000 shots without cleaning, even free of interference, depends on many factors.
Semi-automatic rifles with indirect gas pressure loading system have many more moving parts compared to repeaters.
Starting with the gas piston running in the gas valve, through the breechblock carrier with drive and buffer rod, to the striking piece of the trigger assembly.
There is a lot of small stuff that needs to be moved after the shot and of which parts such as the gas valve and piston as well as the bolt carrier run in precisely adjusted guides.
As the load of the shot increases, more dirt gets inside the weapon and affects the movement.
This is due to the basic design: With a repeater, the entire pressure reduction takes place via the muzzle.
A semi-automatic, on the other hand, already opens when there is still some pressure in the barrel.
A small part of the pressure reduction therefore takes place via the chamber and thus transports combustion residues into the weapon.
The question is therefore how the SIG-Sauer candidate, which is also affected by this design, would perform in the mammoth shot test.
The preparations – we clean the MCX Virtus:
It started with a basic cleaning. We dismantled the SIG Sauer into its main groups and completely disassembled the cap carriers and gas rods.
A toothbrush and brake cleaner were used to remove oil and smoke, and compressed air was used to clean even hard-to-reach areas such as the trigger assembly.
Then we wetted all moving parts and the bolt guide rails with a thin film of Addinol weapon oil W 18 – true to the motto: less is more.
By the way: SIG Sauer also shows a lubrication chart in the gun’s operating instructions, which marks the parts to be oiled: very good.
We cleaned the barrel core mechanically with W 18 and a suitable bronze brush.
It is advisable to soak the barrel in oil-soaked felt or patch a few days in advance.
The oil then has enough time to loosen and soften the deposits from the powder burn-off.
The test setup – how do you carry out a 1,000-shot test?
Besides the question of trouble-free weapon function, we were interested in the precision.
Since the mechanics and barrel become more dirty from shot to shot, the accuracy of the shot should also suffer.
But because it makes little sense to measure 200 scattering circles of 5 shots each, the MCX fired 20 series of 50 shots each, in cycles of 15 minutes each.
Afterwards the gun was allowed to cool down for 15 minutes.
With the last 10-shot magazine of each series, the testers then fired 2 5-shot scattering circuits set to precision.
The first cartridge of each of the first 5-series was fed manually via the breechblock catch lever.
In this way we wanted to check how manual feeding affected the precision.
Parallel to the scattering circuits, we determined the bullet speed of each of the 10 shots with the flour measuring device BMC 18 5 m before the muzzle.
We also paid attention to the case ejection.
Ejection range and angle depend on the weapon side primarily on the breech return speed, the spring force of the ejector pin and the geometry of the extractor claw and on the ejector window.
With increasing shot load, the breech return speed can change due to contamination of the breech guide.
A change in the spring force of the ejector is usually not to be expected, but the bore of the pin can become clogged and thus impair its function.
Last but not least, the testers looked at how dirty the weapon was.
Especially on the trigger assembly, breech head, bolt carrier and locking mechanism on the barrel and on the gas valve.
The test sequence – SIG Sauer MCX Virtus Sport in action:
Normally, test weapons run through as many hands as possible to obtain maximum impressions.
Not here – as noted above, one tester fired every 1,000 rounds.
This has nothing to do with addiction to pleasure or masochism, but rather with functional safety: For a semi-automatic machine to repeat safely, many elements must interact precisely.
For example, the shutter opening times, mass, and spring, as well as the gas release bore and the transmission mechanism of the gas pressure impulse are matched to the caliber and the weapon.
All this, however, requires that the shooter pulls the gun into the shoulder during the shot, i.e. that he or she opposes the recoil impulse with an abutment.
If it is only slightly pulled in or not at all, a larger part of the breech impulse is transferred to the weapon, which then also recoils.
This can reduce this impulse to such an extent that the weapon no longer repeats.
The tester therefore made sure that the weapon is always retracted with the same force.
Next important parameter: The test ammunition was to be subjected to a loosely identical laboratory test in order to obtain meaningful scattering circuits.
RUAG Ammotec therefore supported us with 1,000 Swiss P Styx Action cartridges.
This cartridge type carries a 69 grains (4.5 grams) hollow point bullet with a closed base.
Fortunately, this laboratory comes to the user on 10-grain loading strips.
Thus, the testers were able to load the magazines with the Maglula StripLULA AR-15 loading aid in a lightning-fast manner, without damaging the fingers. In the shooting test the gas nozzle setting was always on “minus”, as intended for normal shooting operation.
When shooting, the gun was sitting in front on a Harris bipod, while the pistol grip rested on a shooting rest.
The evaluation – that was our 1,000 shots with the SIG Sauer:
In terms of function, the SIG Sauer MCX Virtus did not show any weaknesses.
Nothing was broken, all cartridges were fed in cleanly and the fired cases were ejected reliably.
There were fluctuations in precision, as the graphic on the left shows.
Smaller and larger scattering circuits alternate. Remarkable is the 1st scattering circle, i.e. the one with the 1st cartridge fed manually by breech block.
Because this shot group is significantly larger than the 2nd scattering circle.
The mean value of the 20 series divided into 1st and 2nd scattering circle differs with 58.2 mm to 44.35 mm.
During the test the precision of the 1st scattering circle in the sliding average improved from 58 to 51 mm.
In contrast, the 2nd scattering circle reached 40 mm at the beginning of the test and deteriorated to 44 mm towards the end of the test.
More clear results were obtained by measuring the bullet velocity v5.
Initially the moving average was 830 m/s. This value increased successively to 835 m/s at the end of the test.
From a load of about 450 shots, the range of variation in v5 also decreased.
The reason for this is that the barrel becomes greasy by about one to two hundredths of a millimeter during such continuous firing.
This increases the resistance of the bullets to being pressed in and pressed through, which is accompanied by an increase in gas pressure and thus a slight increase in the muzzle velocity.
There were no surprises with the case ejection, however.
As the picture below shows, there are hardly any differences in the soiling of the casings.
The picture shows the last shot of each series, starting from the left.
And what about the contamination after 1,000 shots?
In the trigger group, there was hardly any difference between the end of the test and the beginning of the test.
Only a few powder crumbs got lost in the trigger mechanism.
On the breech plate, the contamination was limited to the areas facing the chamber:
The drive rod, the front and underside of the breech carrier and, to a lesser extent, the breech nipples.
Much more dirt was found on the bolt bush and the upper part around the ejection window.
The gas piston showed clearly visible smoke, but could hardly be moved by hand with any effort.
The situation was different with the gas valve. The gas valve is equipped with a piston ring seal under tension to seal it from the combustion gases.
In order to remove the valve, the seal has to shear off the smoke in the gas valve bore, which significantly increases the removal resistance.
Our conclusion after the endurance test of the SIG Sauer MCX Virtus:
A well-designed semi-automatic machine can easily withstand series of 1,000 or more shots.
Nevertheless, to maintain precision and functional reliability, it should be cleaned regularly, especially the gas valve, bolt bush, bolt carrier, upper front part and barrel.
A thin film of oil after shooting dissolves the burnt powder residues and can be quickly removed before the next shot.
You should also continuously support the function of the moving parts with a good gun oil.
As with cars, constant use of a gun prevents damage to the standing area.
Whether you clean your gun every Saturday like your car à la Car Wash should be up to you …
Final Verdict – The Best AR-15 Pistols
These are the best pistol AR-15s out there.
And all it takes is a little patience and deciding if your hard earned money is worth it or not.
No matter what the task, nothing is more rewarding than having a weapon which can shoot like a semi-automatic gun.
While there are some safety concerns surrounding these styles of weapons, they are still as common and enjoyable among shooters of all sorts.
To have one of your own because you want to see what the fun is all about in those.
