5 Best AR-10 Barrels in 2021

Armalite, a subsidiary of Fairchild Aircraft Corporation, first produced the contemporary AR-10 rifle in the 1950s.

Though the initial straight-line barrel rifle was intended for military usage, it evolved into a forerunner for a broad variety of rifles, including the M16.

Users of the AR-10 nowadays may decide to make their own modifications to the factory-made version to suit their requirements.

This may include swapping out the barrel with one of the numerous choices on the market.

The newest barrel versions are generally made of high-grade stainless steel to resist the immense pressure of expanding gas and to guarantee that the projectile achieves the best muzzle velocity possible.

In this article, we’ll look at a few contemporary alternatives as well as what constitutes a good barrel.

What to Look for in an AR-10 Barrel

If you know what to look for in an AR-10 barrel, finding one won’t be nearly as difficult.

If you want to identify one for yourself, utilize the following list as a guide to what makes one stand out the most.

Here are some things to look out for:

The cost

Many customers will be unconcerned with the price.

However, if you’re on a budget and want the highest quality and performance you can get, you’ll be able to locate a barrel that meets your needs.

Don’t cut corners or compromise quality to save a few dollars.

You will grasp the genuine worth of what a barrel can do for you if the price is the last thing on your mind.

Select high-quality products

Longevity and durability are inextricably linked to high-quality materials.

As a result, you should be able to discover a barrel made of steel or other high-quality materials that will stand out in several ways.

Just because something is high-quality doesn’t imply you should ignore cleaning and maintenance.

Take excellent care of your barrel, and it will look after you in its own special manner.

Constructing & Installation of the Best AR-10 Barrels in .308

Best AR-10 Barrel

We were able to identify barrels that are simple to install.

This means you won’t have to go for one that requires gunsmith installation.

You’ve already waited long enough and spent a sufficient amount of money on a barrel.

So why pay more to have it installed by someone else?

Find one with a drop-in design that will just take a few minutes to install and will have you up and running in no time.

Is it possible to interchange AR-10 and AR-15 barrels?

Despite their similar design, one of the primary distinctions between the two versions is their caliber, which renders some components non-interchangeable.

The .308/7.62×51 cartridge is used in the AR-10, whereas the.223/5.56 x 45 cartridge is used in the AR-15. The AR-10 is also a little bigger and hence a little heavier.

Furthermore, the AR-10 has greater room between the pistol grip and the lower receiver than the AR 15.

As a result of minor variations in caliber design and chambering, the barrels of the two versions, as well as their thread and nut extensions, are not interchangeable.

Find out more about the AR-10 and AR-15’s interchangeable components here.

Barrel Length for .308 AR (Optional)

The ideal barrel length is determined by a number of criteria, including the kind of barrel, twist rate, and bullet weight.

In comparison to a shorter barrel, a longer barrel allows for increased muzzle velocity and bullet spin upon departure, but this does not imply superior accuracy.

Best AR-10 Barrel

However, holding a longer barrel from an unsupported stance is simpler, which may result in more precise firing.

A hunting rifle chambered for high-intensity cartridges like the.308 usually has a barrel length of 22-24 inches.

Because this cartridge typically travels at 2500-2800 fps, the velocity reduction in a 22-inch barrel isn’t significant, and the balance and swing are unaffected.

Most .308 ARs have a velocity shift of roughly 30-40 fps per inch of barrel length, although individual barrels of the same length may vary by that much (or more).

Users, on the other hand, claim that a shorter barrel is more stiff, implying that it confers higher accuracy.

Because the AR-10 is lighter, most users prefer a length of 18.5 inches for best accuracy and ease of movement.

At the end of the day, selecting a barrel length is a personal preference that is based on your comfort and intended usage.

We hope that this post has given you a better notion of what to look for, as well as familiarized you with several common models and elements to consider while upgrading, such as cartridge size, barrel length, stiffness, and resistance. We wish you a successful shooting session!

The rifle barrel – guarantor of precision?!

The barrel plays a decisive role in determining the precision of a rifle.

Together with the stock, it forms the unit which, in perfect symbiosis, constitutes good precision.

The factors of a barrel that determine precision can only be described in a highly scientific way.

Therefore, many myths and discussions, fueled by resourceful marketing departments, surround the condition of barrels.

In this article, we describe the most important characteristics in theory and describe their effects in practice.

In order to approach this complex topic, we first distinguish rifle barrels in length and in thickness, i.e. diameter.

As the heaviest component, the barrel also determines the weight.

Furthermore, there are fluted or round barrels, which we will briefly discuss.

We will also take a look at the different colors that have become available in the meantime.

With this, we want to briefly present all the factors that in theory decide on the precision of your weapon and take a look at what effects result in practice.

Barrel length of the Best AR-10 Barrels in .308

Best AR-10 Barrels in .308

The rifled rifle barrel provides the rotation and thus the stability of the bullet on its trajectory.

The longer the barrel, the longer the rifling and lands can keep the bullet rotating on its axis.

The respective twist length (path of the bullet in the barrel to rotate once around its own axis) of the rifling and fields in the barrel determine how often the bullet is set in rotation.

Basically, therefore, it can be stated that longer barrels generally lead to more rotation and thus to greater stability of the bullet trajectory.

For shooting over longer distances, a longer barrel (possibly with a short twist length) is consequently the most appropriate from an internal ballistic point of view.

We therefore recommend the use of longer barrels to hunters who mostly hunt at longer distances.

The standard barrel lengths for hunting rifles are 51cm, 56cm and 61cm, which have been established by many manufacturers.

However, there are also significantly shorter barrel lengths of up to 45cm and barrels that are beyond the 62cm mark.

For our needs, the latter two categories are ruled out as custom-made products.

Beyond the aforementioned internal ballistic impact of the barrel length, the length of the barrel also determines the overall weight and length of the hunting rifle and therefore inevitably its manageability.

The shorter the barrel, the lighter the weapon. Shorter guns are, of course, also less bulky.

In terms of manageability, shorter barrels thus bring significant advantages. In practice, this is appreciated by many hunters when shooting up, hunting on the move, driven or driven hunting.

Some manufacturers, such as Blaser, even advertise the R8 as essentially more manageable due to the shorter gun length and lighter weight (though this is not directly due to the shorter barrel, but to the design of the system case of the combined magazine and trigger).

From a shooting point of view, a shorter, lighter rifle is therefore easier to aim and sight in. This becomes particularly clear when applying the shot freehand. Lighter weapons are easier to handle and allow the hunter to act more intuitively when aiming.

Many hunters take advantage of these benefits when hunting wild boar, which is why barrel lengths of 51 cm are often touted as the best solution for hunting wild boar.

At distances of up to 100m, the internal ballistic advantages of a longer barrel play a negligible role in practice.

Effects of strength and geometry of the Best AR-10 Barrels in .308

Best AR-10 Barrels in .308

Also to be neglected from a practical hunting point of view are the geometry and the strength of the barrel.

Especially in these areas there is a lot of discussion, which is mainly due to the fact that these issues are very complex.

When a shot is fired, a barrel begins to oscillate axially. In addition, heat is generated by the shot release, which acts radially on the barrel. Both therefore influence the precision.

The higher the amplitude of the oscillation, the greater the deviation of the bullet as it leaves the barrel.

The heat generated causes the metal of the barrel to warp or twist due to the thermal stress.

Long, thin barrels vibrate with greater amplitude, whereas short, thicker barrels vibrate less.

On the other hand, shorter, thicker barrels heat up more.

Due to the larger surface area and the lower thickness of the material, thinner, long barrels cool down more quickly.

So physically we end up in a debacle, under which in any case our precision suffers!?

Of course, this is not the case – at least when measured against current industry standards and our hunting purpose.

Most standard repeating rifles today have a free-floating barrel, which is supposed to prevent the barrel vibration from being transmitted to the stock and thus to the rifle.

This does not actually increase the precision, but simply does not reduce it any further.

However, this must be accompanied by a stable system bedding that is as free of stress as possible so that the rifle does not warp.

For good precision, it is therefore imperative to ensure that the rifle has a stable bedding block for the system and that the barrel is free to oscillate.

Best AR-10 Barrels in .308

In order to optimize the oscillation behavior per se and thus increase the inherent precision of the barrel, stronger barrels were developed, which usually have an outer diameter of 19mm.

They are often described by the manufacturers as semi-weight barrels.

As a rule, they are about 300g heavier than the standard 17mm barrels.

At the range, at least many hunters report that 19mm semi-weight barrels make it easier for them to shoot series in as small a spread circle as possible.

Match barrels with an outer diameter of 21mm can therefore be shot more accurately, but are hardly ever used in hunting practice, as this makes the rifle very heavy.

Thicker barrels have the physical disadvantage that they are more susceptible to heat.

In order to reduce the weight and the heat effect, milled grooves have now been made in stronger barrels to increase the surface area and thus bring about faster cooling of the barrel.

However, even with stronger round barrels, we have never been able to perceive a significant increase in temperature and thus an impairment of precision while hunting, since we also understandably do not fire several hundred rounds as we do with an assault rifle.

However, the omission of material in the fluting of the thicker barrel saves weight. It is also claimed that the fluting increases the bending strength of the material, but this is complete nonsense from a physical point of view.

Only vibrations can be slightly reduced by fluting, according to scientific studies on silhouette weapons.

Nevertheless, fluted barrels are considered to be more precise and lighter for marketing purposes and are therefore sometimes offered at a higher price than round barrels.

The fact is that despite the weight savings due to the fluting, the barrels are still usually several hundred grams heavier than comparable thinner barrels.

There is, however, a decisive disadvantage with fluted barrels if they are not worked absolutely precisely.

If the distance between the barrels is not exactly the same or the wall thicknesses differ only minimally, the barrel is physically more likely to bend due to the resulting thermals.

Deviations of 10cm at 200m can easily occur automatically.

Best AR-10 Barrels in .308

For this reason, some hunters condemn fluted barrels in their entirety, claiming that industrial production is never 100% possible without deviations.

Unfortunately, we cannot say whether this is really the case, but we could not register any significant deviations in fluted barrels at 300m compared to round barrels, even after a daily load of 100 rounds.

However, a long-term load is still pending.

Coloring of the Best AR-10 Barrels in .308

Another relatively new trend is that more and more manufacturers are now offering their barrels in a variety of graded colors, up to and including a brightly polished barrel, in order to achieve better temperature management. In the sun, barrels heat up faster than they would from firing.

As a result, bullet velocity is higher as heat increases in the shot release.

Thus, deviations can occur due to the accompanying more elongated trajectory.

Manufacturers therefore try to counteract this with various color spectra (e.g.: matte, burnished or even bright, polished). Positive effects have been achieved under laboratory conditions and in direct sunlight.

However, the practical use in hunting remains questionable.

When stalking or sitting in the forest, the barrel is not directly and continuously exposed to direct sunlight.

A bare barrel, however, is additionally reflective. In the sunny months of summer with high temperatures, in our view there is hardly any practical advantage to be gained from better temperature management of the barrel by coloring, since hides rich in shade or hunting at dusk are almost always preferred.

However, coloring can certainly be an advantage in mountain hunting.

At low temperatures at high altitudes and in the absence of vegetation, direct sunlight and the heating of the barrel are of greater importance for precision.

Since the rifle has to be shot at longer distances, the coloration can contribute to better temperature management.

Best AR-10 Barrels in .308

In recent years, manufacturers such as Merkel or Blaser have developed modular designs for their Helix and R8 or R93 Take Down models and thus included interchangeable barrels in their range, which means that every hunter can now fully live out his obsession for different barrels and calibers.

There seems to be almost no limit to the imagination, which of course has its price.

In hunting practice, the aim is to bring the piece down with only one aimed shot at a time.

Like many of our hunting companions, we could hardly find any relevant differences in the quality of the barrels.

Almost all barrels of well-known manufacturers are nowadays free-swinging and sufficiently well bedded.

They are durable and accurate with more than 10,000 rounds.

From our point of view, color and condition of the barrels are rather an aesthetic component for the hunting purpose defined by us and influence the precision, handling and finally the hunting success to an imperceptible extent.

Temperature effects due to multiple firing sequences are negligible and probably only relevant on the shooting range. What is important is good manageability.

At just over a meter and weighing a little over 3kg, they are easy to handle, reliable and accurate, and fulfill our hunting purpose in every way.

We currently use hunting rifles from Savage Arms. They meet all our needs in terms of barrel and in practice in general.
